ROASTER'S NOTES:
El Melico is a small farm owned by our friends at La Minita. The farm, consisting of 20 hectares, produces mostly boutique micro-lots that are processed at the Beneficio Rio Tarrazú (BRT) mill, located at the confluence of the Tarrazú and Candelaria rivers. While visiting Costa Rica this past harvest season, we tasted this lot on the cupping table and knew we had to have it.
It is a fully washed coffee, and the variety is Geisha. This variety has become the gold standard for high-scoring, top-quality coffees since its re-emergence in Panama 21 years ago in the “Best of Panama” coffee competition. Its origins have since been traced back to the Gesha region in southwestern Ethiopia. From there, the variety has been cultivated in several other regions with varying levels of success.
Geisha can be very difficult to grow and requires unique, often colder, and harsher conditions. As a result, yields are usually low, making return on investment a difficult decision for producers.
