Rooted in Relationships

A passion for serving great coffee

In 1988, before the Pacific Northwest became home to the coffeehouse boom, Larry and Cherie Challain opened the first Dancing Goats® Coffee Bar in Olympia, WA. Their passion for serving great coffee grew into a passion for roasting the world’s finest coffees when they became the owners of Batdorf & Bronson® Coffee Roasters.

1994-2007

Bringing specialty coffee to Atlanta

In 1994, Batdorf & Bronson® built a new roastery in Atlanta, Georgia, that could accommodate a larger production operation. By 2007, the first stand-alone retail operation in Atlanta opens in the suburb of Decatur, the Dancing Goats Coffee® Bar.

2016-2023

Celebrating the past & the future

Full of growth and change, the mid-2000's brought 5 new cafes, a 30th anniversary celebration, and the launch of dancinggoats.com. By 2023, Cherie and Larry were ready for the adventure of retirement, and they entrusted their lifelong passion to Tricia Zimmer and her brother, Tyler Zimmer.

Today

Relationships that span decades

The 10+ year friendship between the Challains and the Zimmers is about so much more than their shared passion for coffee: they are two families with parallel journeys, a love for community, and a mission to protect the ethics of relationship coffee. Their friendship has allowed Dancing Goats® to continue to nurture their decades-long relationships with coffee producers across the globe.
