ROASTER'S NOTES:
This fully washed coffee comes to us from the Igale producing group in the area of Songwe. Here, roughly 450 small producers from neighboring villages pool their coffee together and deliver to a centralized wet mill. While we used to have high-quality Tanzanian coffee in our lineup regularly, it has been a while since we have found one worthy of purchasing due to the country’s fluctuating quality over the past few years. However, this year we were excited to find this great example of what a Tanzanian peaberry should be.
A ”peaberry” occurs when one seed develops inside of a coffee cherry instead of two. This has a natural occurrence rate of about 7 or 8%. The beans are usually small and round in form unlike the more common flat sided “long berry.” The peaberries are sorted out in the dry milling process through special screening and density sorting.
