Kibingo washing station is located in the Kayanza commune of northern Burundi, sitting at 1,893 meters above sea level. The surrounding farms that supply the station stretch across neighboring hills between 1,700 and 1,900 meters in elevation. In total, Kibingo works with 1,739 registered coffee growers spread across 18 hills in the region. Producers delivering to Greenco washing stations are organized into groups of 30 farmers, each led by a farm leader who helps coordinate communication and logistics between growers and the station.

The station is well equipped to process coffee with care and precision. Kibingo operates with 10 fermentation tanks, two soaking tanks, and a drying field that includes 165 drying tables along with four pre-drying tables. During harvest, cherries are selectively handpicked and delivered by farmers, most of whom manage small plots averaging about 250 coffee trees. With each tree producing roughly 1.5 kilograms of cherry, the typical farmer sells between 200 and 300 kilograms each year.

Coffee production in Burundi is almost entirely driven by smallholder farmers, making washing stations like Kibingo essential to bringing these coffees to the global specialty market. Through careful processing and farmer support initiatives—including livestock projects and programs designed to strengthen cooperatives and improve yields—Kibingo helps highlight the remarkable quality Burundi’s coffee growers achieve year after year.
