A fully-washed coffee from the Caranavi region of Bolivia. These Typica and Caturra varieties carry light and clean to the cup with flavors of caramel, pecan, nougat and molasses.
ROASTERS NOTES:
It was nearly 20 years ago that we met Pedro Rodriguez at a coffee event somewhere in Central America. The beauty of events like this and the coffee industry in general is you never know when the seeds you plant will eventually come to fruition. We are pleased to offer this Buena Vista coffee again this year.
Bolivia’s output of coffee is very small compared to neighboring coffee producing countries. As with so many opportunities that have presented themselves over our three decades, we feel extremely blessed to have been able to build this relationship face to face allowing us- and you- to sample what are rare coffees for the North American market.
Pedro has a milling operation and an export company that represents hundreds of small producers throughout the Caranavi region of Bolivia. The program that was created to organize these small lot producers is called “Sol de La Manana,” or the “Morning Sun” program. Members of the program receive agronomic support and, in the five years since the program has started, many of the producers have seen huge increases in both yield and cup quality. In fact, the program has been so successful that the Rodriguez family received a 2019 sustainability award from the Specialty Coffee Association for their success in creating and implementing this program.
The producing area is very high in elevation, pushing 2000 meters in some places. The mill is called “Buena Vista” and once again for this year we selected to offer a “peaberry,” small bullet like beans where only one seed forms inside of the cherry instead of two. The coffee is de-pulped and mechanically washed. However, no water is used during the fermentation process, in an effort to conserve as much water as possible.
