ROASTERS NOTES:
Upon traveling south from Addis, you soon enter the great Rift Valley. The area is believed to be the origin of humankind, a place that is steeped in natural history and mystique. Eventually you climb from the valley floor to a lush green oasis. The towns of Awasa and Dila greet you, and once again you are reminded you are indeed in coffee country.
Yirgacheffe is a high-altitude sub-region within the larger area of Sidamo. Known for producing some of the finest coffees in the world, Yirgacheffe farmers bring their coffee cherries to the Naga Singage (Sin-Ga-Jay) washing station, where only the highest quality is selected for this “grade one” lot. Naga Singage refers to the nearby mountain known as a place of spiritual healing and reconciliation. The mill has been under the management of Testi coffee, an exporter based in Addis, since 2018 and has seen quality improvements year after year resulting from continued investment. In addition to mill renovation, Testi has also invested in a local school for continued education in the community. There are roughly 1000 small land holders that contribute coffee cherry to this washing station.
