ROASTER'S NOTES:
This fully washed coffee comes to us from the Mbeya area of southern Tanzania. The region is bordered to the south by Zambia and Malawi and Lake Rukwa to the north. Here, many small producers pool their coffee together and deliver to a centralized wet mill. While we used to have high-quality Tanzanian coffee in our lineup regularly, it has been a while since we have found one worthy of purchasing due to the country’s fluctuating quality over the past few years. However, this year we were excited to find this great example of what a Tanzanian peaberry should be. A ”peaberry” occurs when one seed develops inside of a coffee cherry instead of two. This has a natural occurrence rate of about 7 or 8%. The beans are usually small and round in form unlike the more common flat sided “long berry.” The peaberries are sorted out in the dry milling process through special screening and density sorting. Varieties in this regional blend are Kent, a Typica derivative, and Bourbon.
