Shade Grown
Shade trees play a vital role in regulating both the temperature and soil composition of the coffee farm. Shade trees also reduce the sun stress on coffee plants and provide mulch from falling leaves and fronds. By promoting balanced soils and slower fruit maturation, shade trees can markedly improve the taste of the coffee that is grown beneath them.
Bird lovers have introduced the issue of shade grown coffee into the public conversation, as shade coffee plantations host some of the highest numbers of migratory bird species. Over 150 species of birds that breed in North America have been shown to use shade coffee farms as their winter habitat. Batdorf & Bronson Coffee Roasters, is proud to be members of the Northwest Shade Coffee Campaign, sponsored by the Seattle Audubon Society. Visit their website at www.shadecoffee.org to find out more about preserving healthy habitat for birds.
